Happy Befana

Taken from “Christmas Traditions”
Legend has it that the Three Wise Men who had traveled long and far in search of Bethlehem approached La Befana. One night of their journey, they became lost, and came to the doorstep of the Italian Grandmother Befana to ask for directions.
Befana was consumed with the sweeping and cleaning of her home, as she was considered the best housekeeper in the village with the most pleasant home, and quickly dismissed the Wise Men when they told her of their search for the New Born King. Even when they asked her to come with them to pay respects to Jesus, she stubbornly refused. Later in the night a brilliant star appeared in the sky, and it's beauty quickly made Befana realize she had made a terrible mistake.
She gathered up toys and presents for the Christ Child and tried to run after them, but her old legs could not catch up with them. In frustration, she wept over the dirty broom that had been her misfortune.
The sincerity of her tears gave the broom new life, and it scooped her up into the night sky to search for the Wise Men she had treated so badly. La Befana has never found the Three Kings or the stable they searched for. So to this day, every year on January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany, she flies over the homes of the children of Italy leaving all the good children toys and candy, while the bad children get coal, until she finds the baby Jesus.
The name Befana is derived from the mispronunciation of the Italian word epifania.

Yesterday was the celebration of La Befana in our town. The town hall passed out toys for every child, and the Piazza was full of people, music, and games for the children. Everyone was excited when La Befana passed overhead in the helicopter! It was hard to get a picture, but I saw her broomstick waving in the air…

Buon Anno 2008

Monday, the 31st, Antonello and I prepared seven kilos of meat and all the side dishes for our New Years Eve Party. In total, there were ten of us gathered at our friend Salvo's house for the special night. We dined up to the countdown when Vita, Salvo’s girlfriend, popped the champagne. Soon after, there were fireworks exploding off our terrace, music, and dancing… I must not forget, there was Karaoke!! enzo

Here he is deboning one of the turkey legs...

Christmas Party

December the 23rd, we invited friends and family to our home to celebrate the holiday with Christmas Treats. Everyone enjoyed the desserts and the atmosphere of the season! There were over seventeen of us moving from room to room... At the end of the night, each family was given an elegant cake box that they filled with their favorite desserts to enjoy at their home.

These are all photos from the following day. Every table was filled with sweats!!

LE SETTE MUSE - CONCERTO DI NATALE 2007

Saturday, December 22nd, we had our first Gospel concert. For the past three months, we have been working on Gospel music, and not to mention English! The night was a success. This Sunday there is another concert, and I hear of many more in the future...

Thanks to Bastiano, you can view pictures from the night by clicking on one of these thumbnail shots.

Compleanno!

So, well, An-------. I have a lot of catching up to do! December 20th was my Birthday! My husband knows just what I like, and we celebrated with my favorite sweet treat, Cannoli di Ricotta. My birthday also just happens to be the same day, same year, and about the same time as our good friend Carmelo! That night, we all went out to Catania for a nice fish dinner to celebrate together. I know, I forgot my camera at home... You will have to use your imagination... ;)
